The first reference to this village comes from the end of the 13 th century.
At the beginning of the 15 th century Chlum and villages close to it were in
the possession of the Lords of Rosenberg . Later the owners changed several
times until 1861, when they came into the possession of the Lords of Habsburg.
The last aristocratic keeper of Chlum u Třeboně was the house of d´Este, the
last successor to the Austro-Hungarian throne, duke Ferdinand d´Este. After
the 1 st world war the estate with its national forests and manors fell under
the protection of Prague for preservation. Between the two wars Chlum u Třeboně
became a much sought after holiday area. The extent of the complexes of woods
and the “Iron Curtain” saved the valuable natural countryside from the headlong
development of agriculture after the 2nd world war. New holiday houses were
built by different enterprises, and the development of motoring brought car
camping. Chlum u Třeboně and the contiguous villages became famous summer resorts
offering a rich and varied choice of activities.
The Pilgrimage Church of the Virgin Mary's Ascension on the Hill l dominates the whole town. The original baroque building inspired by the famous Pilgrimage Churc.h in Austrian Mariazell was finished in 1745. At that time the church had a cross disposition with a dome over its middle. In 1805 the church was extended into a triple nave and a sacristy was also built. Viewing of this church is possible. The key is in the town office.
The small baroque Hunting Chateau dates from 1710. The chateau is inaccessible at present, but a visit to its park with its many rare trees is worth-while.
