Lomnice nad Lužnicí is situated among a picturesque group of ponds. It was
built below a castle of the same name, which had been maintained in the style
of its holder Oldřich from Lomnice since 1265. Its name originates from the
name of the river it lies upon and this was recorded in 1367.
The oldest places in Lomnice are the surroundings of the St. John the Baptist Church, where the original old village with a small yeomans residence was situated. From 1381 Lomnice was in the possession of Wenceslas IV, who bestowed royal privileges upon it and raised its status to a town. He allowed it to be fenced with stone walls and provided with towers and a moat. Its next holder, Oldřich of Rosenberg , had the castle pulled down, and Lomnice became a permanent possession of the Lords of Rosenberg until 1611. The Rosenberg period is one of the happiest periods in the history of Lomnice. The most important thing the Lords of Rosenberg contributed to the history of this place was the building of ponds that became jewels of the landscape. Between Klec and Vlkov in the north there are many small ponds situated in the middle of woods coalescing to almost form one water surface interrupted by narrow dams and alleys of oaks. Even their names are interesting and beautiful : Vlkov, Krajina (Landscape), Nový (New), Překvapil (Surprised), Rod (Clan), Naděje (Hope), Víra (Faith), Láska (Love), Měkký (Soft), Strakatý (Spotted), Skutek (Deed), Dobrá vůle (Good Will) and Blaník. Later, under the Lords of Schwarzenberg trade and crafts developed.
Of the monuments here we should mention St John the Baptist Church from the 14th century, which was rebuilt in baroque style at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century. Its impressive four-sided tower dominates the town. St. Wenceslas Church , originally the castle chapel, will fascinate you with its cross vault. The renaissance Old Town Hall on the square is also very interesting.
